Forum Topic: Propecia 1 mg - Is it the Right Choice for Me?

Posted by CurlyHair28 on June 14, 2023 at 9:57 AM

Hi everyone,

I've been experiencing hair loss and have heard a lot about Propecia. I'm considering starting with the 1 mg dose but wanted to get some opinions from those who might have used it or know more about it.

Should I go for it, and what are the potential side effects that I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance!

Hi CurlyHair28,

Thank you for reaching out. Propecia (finasteride) is a medication used to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). The 1 mg dose is the standard dosage and has been proven effective in clinical trials.

When considering starting on Propecia, it's important to understand that:

Benefits:- It can help slow down or stop hair thinning.- Some users experience regrowth of lost hair over time (though this varies).

Potential Side Effects:- Decreased libido and erectile dysfunction are the most commonly reported side effects. However, these tend to be reversible once you stop taking the medication.- Rarely, men might report changes in mood or ejaculatory disorders.

I would recommend discussing with your healthcare provider to assess if it’s a good fit for you based on your overall health and personal preferences. Also, give yourself some time since hair regrowth can take several months to become noticeable.

Do you have any specific concerns about starting the medication?

Thank you so much, DrMedic!

I am a bit concerned about the sexual side effects. Have users found ways to mitigate them? Also, is there anything I can do if they occur?

You're welcome, CurlyHair28!

Side effects such as decreased libido or erectile dysfunction are certainly a concern and should be monitored. Here’s what you can do:

Mitigation Strategies:- Talk to Your Doctor: Regular check-ins with your healthcare provider are crucial. They might adjust the dosage if side effects become problematic.- Lifestyle Adjustments: Engaging in regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, and reducing stress levels can improve overall sexual health.

If these side effects occur:- Immediate Action: If you experience any concerning symptoms, contact your doctor right away. Do not stop or adjust the dosage on your own.- Alternative Treatments: Your healthcare provider may suggest alternative treatments like minoxidil (Rogaine) if Propecia's side effects are too disruptive.

Remember, while these side effects can occur, they’re not universal and many men use finasteride without experiencing them. It’s all about finding the right balance for your individual health needs.

Does this help clarify things? Any other questions?

Yes, that helps a lot! I will definitely talk to my doctor before starting. Also, do you have any tips for dealing with hair loss while waiting for the medication to kick in?

Absolutely, CurlyHair28!

Dealing with hair loss can be challenging, especially during the initial stages. Here are a few tips:

Immediate Tips:- Scalp Massages: Regular scalp massages can improve blood circulation and promote healthier hair growth.- Healthy Diet: Ensure you’re getting enough protein, vitamins (especially B-complex), and minerals like iron and zinc, which are essential for healthy hair.

Short-Term Solutions:- Hair Products: Use volumizing shampoos and conditioners to give your hair a fuller appearance temporarily.- Wigs or Hairpieces: Consider using wigs or hairpieces if you feel self-conscious about your hair loss. High-quality options can look very natural.

Longer-Term Approaches:- Minoxidil (Rogaine): This is another FDA-approved treatment for male pattern baldness that comes in foam or liquid form applied to the scalp.- Lifestyle Changes: Managing stress and quitting smoking, if applicable, can also improve overall hair health.

Remember, patience is key when starting any new hair loss treatment. Propecia might take several months to show noticeable results, so it’s important to stick with your regimen consistently.

If you have more concerns or need further guidance, feel free to ask!
