Forum Topic: Doxycycline 50mg for Dogs - Advice from the Vet
Posted by: DogLover123
Hi everyone,
I've been researching antibiotic options for my dog. My vet recommended doxycycline 50mg, but I'm a bit unsure about how to give it and what kind of side effects to watch out for. Can anyone share their experience or provide some guidance?

Hi DogLover123,
Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic commonly used in dogs for various bacterial infections, including respiratory and urinary tract issues. It's important to follow your vet’s prescription carefully.
Dosage: Typically, 50mg of doxycycline twice daily would be the starting dose for most medium-sized dogs, but it can vary based on weight. Make sure you confirm this with your vet.
Administering: You can give your dog the pill directly if they swallow it easily, or mix it in a small amount of wet food. It's best to give them the medication at least an hour before feeding time to ensure absorption.
Side Effects: Common side effects include digestive issues like diarrhea and vomiting. If these occur, contact your vet immediately. Some dogs may also experience increased sun sensitivity, so keep them out of direct sunlight as much as possible.
Would love to hear if you have any specific concerns!

Thank you VetFriend for the detailed response!
My dog is quite small (about 5 kg). Do you think she might need a lower dose? Also, how long should I expect her to be on this medication?

Great question DogLover123,
For such a smaller dog, it’s highly likely that a full 50mg tablet would not be necessary. The usual dose is about 2.2-4.4 mg per kg of body weight twice daily, so for your 5kg dog, the dose would probably be around 10 to 20mg twice daily.
Regarding the duration: Typically, a course lasts between 7 to 21 days depending on the severity and type of infection. However, always follow your vet’s advice as they will tailor the treatment specifically for your dog's needs.
Make sure you finish the entire prescribed course even if your dog starts feeling better sooner; this helps prevent antibiotic resistance and ensures complete recovery.
Let me know if there are any other concerns!

That makes a lot of sense. I'll talk to my vet about adjusting the dosage for her size. Also, should I be concerned about her appetite during this time?

Hi DogLover123,
Changes in appetite can occur with any medication and are usually mild and temporary. If your dog shows a significant decrease in appetite or if it persists more than a couple of days, you should contact your vet.
Keep an eye on other signs as well:- Diarrhea or vomiting- Lethargy- Any unusual behavior
Most dogs tolerate doxycycline well, but it’s good to be vigilant. If everything is okay with her appetite and she shows no side effects, then you're probably in the clear.
Feel free to reach out if anything changes!
